What Is Hatha Yoga?
If you've been looking at different types of yoga and wondering what Hatha actually means, you're not alone.
Yoga classes can come with quite a few different names, and it isn't always obvious what you're signing up for.
Hatha yoga is often associated with a slower, more considered approach to practice.
A class might include physical postures, breathing exercises and moments of stillness. Rather than rushing from one movement to another, there is often more space to notice what you're doing and how you're feeling.
That can make Hatha a lovely place to begin if you're new to yoga.
But it isn't only for beginners.
A slower practice can be valuable even when you've been practising for years. Sometimes doing less gives you the opportunity to notice more.
How does your breath feel?
Where are you holding tension?
Are you forcing a movement that doesn't need to be forced?
Can you stay present for a few breaths instead of immediately thinking about what's next?
These are simple questions, but they're at the heart of many yoga practices.
Hatha classes can vary enormously depending on the teacher. One class might feel gentle and meditative. Another might be more physically challenging.
So rather than worrying too much about the label, look at the description of the individual class and choose something that sounds right for you.
Yoga doesn't have to look one particular way.
Sometimes it is movement.
Sometimes it is breath.
Sometimes it is simply learning how to be still for a few minutes.
